On April 6 – 7, 2017 TAIEX Regional Workshop on Combating Violence Against Women and Empowering Equality Bodies organised in cooperation with Directorate General for Justice, European Network of Equality Bodies and Office of the Public Defender in Georgia takes place in Tbilisi, Georgia.
The aim of the regional workshop is to share best practices from Member States on combatting violence against women in particular domestic violence and to empower Equality Bodies in Eastern Partnership countries that will contribute to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women and promote peer learning.
Public Defender of Georgia Ucha Nanuashvili and Deputy Head of Cooperation of EU Delegation to Georgia Kaido Sirel in opening speeches welcomed the participants of meeting.
Within the framework of workshop the provisions of Council of Europe Convention on the prevention violence against women and domestic violence as well as combating these phenomenons (Istanbul Convention) which has been ratified by Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine were reviewed.
On the second day of event the representatives from EaP countries shared the best practices on combating violence against women. In particular, the representative of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Rebublic of Belarus Aleh Karazei admitted the need for relevant legislation development in this area. The representative of the Office of Public Defender of Georgia Ana Iluridze presented Georgian's best outcomes of the Istanbul Convention implementation.
Head of the Gender Equality Section of the Secretariat of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Myroslava Dihtiar and main specialist of counter-trafficking of Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine Vira Martyniuk presented Ukraine’s gender equality ombudswoman experience in combating violence against women and domestic violence.
The representatives of Azerbaijan, Belgium, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Spain, Moldova, Portugal, Croatia and Ukraine took part in the regional workshop.
