On March 22, 2016 at the premises of the Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Communal Services of Ukraine (Minregion) the official kick-off meeting of the Twinning project “Introduction of a Management System of Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in Ukraine” was held.
Project is being implemented jointly with Environment Agency Austria, International Office for Water of France and Regional Ministry of Environment and Territory of Spain.
The project purpose is to bring gradually the Ukrainian waste management system closer to EU standards by introducing effective and sustainable management systems for its household wastes, in particular for WEEE and waste batteries in a first step.
The First Deputy Minister of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Communal Services of Ukraine Vyacheslav Nehoda welcomed the participants of the meeting and stressed on importance of Twinning project implementation in the area of electric and electronic waste management, including waste batteries. Taking into consideration that approximately 10 million tons of household waste is being generated, including hundreds of tons of electronic waste, this issue needs to be solved rapidly.
EU Ambassador Jan Tombinski, Austrian Ambassador Hermine Poppeller, French Ambassador Isabelle Dumont, Commercial Councilor of the Spanish Embassy to Ukraine Jaime Ramón Fernández and Director of Environment Agency Austria Georg Roberning welcomed the participants of the kick-off meeting.
The MS Project Leader Johannes Mayer briefly presented the institutions-partners that will implement the project and Resident Twinning Advisor Elina Velinova Soyanova-Lazarova presented main project objective and purpose and mandatory results to be implemented during the project period.
In this meeting also took part the Sector Manager on Energy, Environment, Green Economy, Civil Protection Jean-Francois Moret, Co-RTA Maksym Barinov, other representatives of Minregion and stakeholders.
The Senior Consultant on the Twinning Coordination Sector of the Center for Adaptation of the Civil Service to the Standards of the European Union Olesia Voroniuk attended the meeting.
For reference: since 2005 according to the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated on 06.10.2005 № 1424/2005 «The Issue on Provision of the Twinning Programme Implementation in Ukraine» the National Agency of Ukraine on Civil Service directs and coordinates the activity on preparation and implementation the Twinning Programme in Ukraine. Moreover the National Agency of Ukraine on Civil Service is the national coordinator of implementation of the institutional building instrument.
